The first in-depth examination of the last years of artist Milton Avery's protracted and celebrated career is the focus of a fresh exhibit at the Norton Museum of Art. Entitled "Milton Avery: The Late Paintings," the exhibit includes 50 major works that feature Avery's witty, spare and graceful style

Until now, according to museum organizers, Avery's career has been viewed as a monolithic whole rather than a series of successive and distinct periods that culminated in the paintings he produc during the last sum of two units decades of his life. In this final phase, Avery's experiments of the 1920 '30 and early '40 coalesced into the increasingly expansive canvases of the 1950 and '60 paintings characterized according to bold color and nearly abstract patterns of simplified form. They are powerful expressions of the importance of family and the beauty of the natural world, said museum officials.

Highlights of the exhibit include "My Daughter, March," "The Haircut" and "Self-Portrait," all from 1947; and "Bicycle Rider according to the Loire" from 1954.
