With more than 65 individual landmarks and six historic districts, the roughly 1.5-square-mile section of Lower Manhattan is undivided of the most important historical areas in the United States, and many landmark-quality buildings were damaged. Other endangered sites include Chateau de Chantilly in France; Larabanga mahometan temple in Ghana; St. George's temple in London and the A. Conger Goodyear House in ancient Westbury, N.Y.
