commonly living in the Twin Cities, Mackerman studied painting and art history at the University of Northern Iowa. Four years later he complet his MFA in drawing and painting at the University of Minnesota. Since then, Mackerman has taught painting at the University of Minnesota, the Minneapolis Institute of Arts and the Minnesota Museum of American Art. He has also won numerous awards for his interpretation of the Midwestern landscape. In addition to his oil painting, Mackerman is also an accomplished theatrical painter and sculptor.
